An Upstate man has now been identified as the suspect killed in an officer involved shooting in the Low Country, earlier this week. The fatal incident occurred Monday in Jasper County. 33 year old, Calaab Kirby of Union has now been identified as the suspect in the pursuit and subsequent shootout.
As we previously reported, The Hardeeville Police Department and Jasper County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an armed and aggressive driver, early Monday morning.
They located Kirby's vehicle at a local gas station, but he then led officers on a chase. The suspect eventually pulled off onto a gravel road and opened fire on the officers. They returned fire, striking Kirby and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
SLED Spokesperson Renee Wunderlich says, none of the officers involved in the shooting were injured. SLED is still investigating the incident which is standard protocol in law enforcement involved shootings, statewide.
