One Upstate Police Department is going to be doing their pre-shift roll calls in the neighborhoods that they serve. They call it "Front Porch Roll Call", it's something that departments in various parts of the country have already been doing. The move by the Spartanburg Police Department will give officers an opportunity to meet local residents and build bridges with the community.
The goal is to ensure that police and community residents are familiar with each other in case an emergency takes place. Residents will be able to ask officers questions during the small and informal meetings. The normal procedures for roll call will be conducted in the field the same as they are for the in-station roll call meetings.
