Laurens School District 55 announced a new requirement for their students starting in the 2022-2023 school year.
Starting this school year, students in the district will be required to carry transparent backpacks and that all bags will be subject to search.
The district said in their announcement that this new requirement is meant as a safety measure, and that some exceptions will be allowed.
Primarily, students who participate in extracurricular activities are allowed to bring non-transparent bags for large items like band instruments or athletic equipment. However, those bags are required to be immediately stored in lockers or other designated areas.
Students are also allowed to bring up to two small non-transparent bags, such as lunch boxes or purses, as long as they are no more than 6" x 9" in size.
In response to privacy concerns, the district suggested that important small items such as wallets be carried in a small non-transparent bag within the transparent backpacks.
The school district also said that exceptions will be made for necessary medical items following an inspection.
