A former lieutenant is suing the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Chuck Wright. The plaintiff Jeremy Byrd has filed a lawsuit for wrongful discharge and defamation.
The suit says Byrd was fired in late August for insubordination while he claims that he wasn't insubordinate. The litigation claims that the hiring and alleged nepotism towards Wright's son at the Sheriff's Office is the crux of the issue.
Last summer it was revealed that Wright was under a State Ethics Commission investigation over the hire. Byrd was fired back in late August after an investigation.
He allegedly said of Wright "The wrong man won the election, hence the reason we are in the situation, we are in". Byrd claims he did not make that statement. Byrd is requesting a jury trial and is requesting a monetary award from the jury.
