Willie Jeffries is a Union native and is a Hall Of Fame College Football Coach. He led the program at SC State in two different stints, he also coached at Wichita State before they dissolved their football program in 1986. Jeffries also coached at Howard University, where he went 25-8 in his final three seasons. He won over 125 games in his career.

Jefferies was named the recipient of the Order Of The Palmetto by then Governor Carroll Campbell in 1988. Jeffries is the only man to hold the distinction of coaching against both Eddie Robinson and Bear Bryant.
