An inmate at a Western North Carolina Jail could be facing additional charges after reportedly faking a drug overdose. Officials say, an inmate at the Rutherford County Detention Center told staff members that they had consumed fentanyl and was overdosing.
The inmate whose identity has not yet been publicly released did not show signs of distress, but 9-1-1 was called out of an abundance of caution. The Rutherford County EMS responded to the jail and the inmate was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.
The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office says the inmate has since admitted to fabricating the story and could face new charges in connection to the incident.
