A Western North Carolina Sheriff embroiled in a scandal has decided to retire. Swain County Sheriff Curtis Cochran was arrested last Friday on multiple charges including sex crimes.
The District Attorney's Office requested Cochran be suspended immediately and then removed from office. Cochran notified the County Board Of Commissioners on Tuesday that he will retire, effective immediately.
The Board will appoint a replacement Sheriff who will fill the position until the end of Cochran's term. The 72 year old will continue to face his criminal charges, there's been no word on when he's due in court.
