WNC suspect exposes deputies and others to fentanyl

RCSO
Rutherford County Sheriff's Office

A suspect is in custody after exposing himself and others to fentanyl during a traffic stop in Western North Carolina. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office stopped a vehicle on Kelly Road in Forest City Friday.

During the stop, deputies saw drugs in plain sight and found a passenger with white powder on his clothing and hands. The passenger, 40 year old Tyree Levon Hickman, tried to dispose of the fentanyl by ripping open the package. That exposed Hickman, the other passengers and deputies to fentanyl.

EMS was called out to decontaminate the vehicle, but nobody had to be hospitalized. Deputies found nearly 5 grams in meth and almost 3 grams of fentanyl during their search.

Hickman is charged with possession of meth and fentanyl, destroying evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also had an outstanding warrant.
