Chuck Wright is getting one last element of special consideration. He was not led away in handcuffs at the end of his sentencing hearing at the federal courthouse in Greenville.
Wright has been given 45 days to "self-report" and show up to be booked into jail. His defense team argued at Tuesday's sentencing hearing that he's not a flight risk. He is requesting to be housed at the Federal Prison in Jesup Georgia. That facility is classified as a medium to minimum security prison camp, which has a drug abuse treatment program. The Federal Bureau of Prisons will make the decision.
Judge Timothy Cain commented as he handed down the sentence that he's certain Chuck Wright did good things as sheriff, but noted that his crimes took place over a long period of time. Judge Cain called it "an indictment of a system that created an environment where the defendant acted with impunity."
