Eating black eyed peas and collard greens on New Year's Day is a long running tradition in the South. The combination of those two foods are supposed to bring luck and money in the new year. The origin of black eyed peas is West Africa and the style in which collards are generally cooked in the South, also originates from West African style cooking. The tradition became a staple in America, after being introduced during the slavery era. Growing up here in South Carolina and my family being primarily from here and Georgia, I was introduced to the tradition, at a young age. So what about you? Do you eat black eyed peas and collard greens on New Year's Day.
