Alex Murdaugh is facing one less lawsuit among the dozens accusing him of conspiracy to defraud clients, law partners and his own brother. The disbarred and disgraced lawyer is being dismissed as a defendant in the suit filed by the mother of the young woman who drowned in the crash of the Murdaugh family's boat during a wild ride on a Beaufort Bay inlet in 2019.
The boat was driven by Paul Murdaugh, who is accused of boating while intoxicated. The suit also named Alex Murdaugh, as the boat's owner and the convenience store operator blamed for selling his then-underaged son beer and hard cider.
Paul Murdaugh and his mother were both shot to death at the famiy's hunting estate -- Alex Murdaugh is charged with killing them -- leaving the storekeeper the only defendant in the wrongful death lawsuit in behalf of Mallory Beech.
The case will be tried October 10th in Hampton County before Judge Daniel Hall. He dismissed Alex Murdaugh from the suit saying the storm of negative publicity around him would make seating an impartial jury impossible.
Alex Murdaugh himself, as well as other family members, could be sued separately and stand trial later.
