In a media release Monday, the State Law Enforcement Division announced that the former Aiken County Chief Deputy Coroner has been charged with misconduct in office and possession of a controlled substance.
Arrest warrants accuse 60 year old Alton Jeffery Smith of taking prescription medications, including controlled substances such as Oxycodone from residences where he was conducting death investigations from 2018 to 2023.
The drugs were not accounted for in his investigations. Smith was charged by SLED and booked into the Aiken County Detention Center.
