Governor Henry McMaster has now officially signed the recently-passed bill that would ban most abortion after roughly six weeks.

The legislation was signed into law Thursday by Governor McMaster after being approved in the state Senate earlier this week.

Now signed into law, it bans most abortions after a so-called “fetal heartbeat” is detected, which is around roughly six weeks.

In a statement, Governor McMaster said “This is a great day for life in South Carolina, but the fight is not over. We stand ready to defend this legislation against any challenges and are confident we will succeed.”

The legislation goes into effect immediately and is almost as quickly expected to face legal challenges from opposition.
