A Colleton County man has been arrested in connection to the shooting of Alex Murdaugh earlier this month, with charges for both the shooting and for conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has announced the arrest of 61-year-old Curtis Edward Smith, a former client of Murdaugh’s, in connection to the shooting of Alex Murdaugh and have charged him with assisted suicide, assault and battery of a high aggravated nature, pointing and presenting a firearm, insurance fraud, and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, with additional charges expected moving forward.
Alex Murdaugh also admitted to SLED that the attempted murder was part of a plan for Murdaugh to be killed so that his son could collect roughly $10 million in life insurance.
According to agents, Murdaugh gave Smith the gun to kill him on Hampton County road, but the attempt failed when the bullet only grazed Murdaugh.
