Alex Murdaugh's defense team is pursuing another chance, however slight, to get the suspended Low Country lawyer out of jail until his trial. A bond hearing is scheduled in Columbia for 9:00 o'clock tomorrow morning. Murdaugh's defense team is headed by former district prosecutor and state Democrat Party chairman Dick Harpootlian.
The defense teams will ask Judge Alison Renee Lee to convert his confinement to house arrest until his trial on more than two dozen charges in a conspiracy to defraud his victims out of four-point-eight million dollars. The 27-count indictment returned by a state grand jury on November 18 accuses Murdaugh of breach of trust, money laundering and forgery. He's been held without bond ever since. The hearing will be virtual, the presiding judge's policy during the pandemic.
