The onetime Lowcountry legal overlord is being held a the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia. Murdaugh was booked on Saturday after being returned from Florida. He was arrested there, as he left the Orlando rehab clinic where he was being treated for opioid addiction. He was released being released on bond charged with conspiracy to commit insurance fraud over the roadside-shooting incident prosecutors say was a failed effort to stage his suicide.
SLED agents returned Murdaugh to South Carolina to face new charges of misappropriation of funds in connection with a multi-million dollar insurance settlement in the heart attack death of the family's housekeeper following a fall at the Murdaugh home. He's accused of diverting the payoff intended for the woman's sons to a bank account for a phony company he had set up for himself.
