It looks like the next Speaker of the State House has been tabbed. Just hours after current Speaker Jay Lucas announced he will not seek re-election, reports out of Columbia surfaced regarding the next person to fill the seat.
All signs indicate Murrell Smith will be named State House Speaker in December. Seemingly, no race will be needed to fill the seat as a majority of State House members are said to be backing Smith. The Sumter Republican is a stalwart with over 2 decades of political experience at the state level.
