A new study finds South Carolina among the top-ten states most dependent on the support of the federal government. While that sounds at least counterintuitive for a red state with a GOP-controlled legislature and governor who stood at Donald Trump's side as he launched his comeback campaign, South Carolina stands seventh in the nation at the Washington economic tap.
The Wallet Hub personal finance website measured the dependency on lines of federal funding as a share of state revenue, the share of federal jobs and the state's financial return on federal taxes. It that category, South Carolina gets a lot more than it gives.
While the state ranks seventh in the nation for overall federal dependency, it's the sixth highest n the percentage of the population receiving direct government support. Alaska tops the list, South Caroline is behind number six, Wyoming, and just one grade-point ahead of Arizona, states with large native American populations living on federal land.
