In a press release Tuesday, North Greenville University in Tigerville said Women's flag football will become the 21st NCAA-sponsored athletic program when competition begins in the 2027–28 academic year.
It's one of the fastest-growing sports in the US, with interest being fueled by increasing high school participation, support from the NFL, and the sport's inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California.
NGU will bring its inaugural recruiting class to campus in the fall of 2027, with the team scheduled to officially begin competing in Conference Carolinas during the spring 2028 season.
Currently more than 60 colleges and universities across the country sponsor women's flag football at the varsity or club level. North Greenville University joins USC Upstate, Charleston Southern University, Erskine College and Newberry College in South Carolina with Varsity Flag Football teams.
