Three South Carolina cities have found their way onto a list from an annual study looking into US cities with the highest STD rates.
Greenville, Charleston and Columbia all found themselves ranked near the top in a list of cities with the highest STD rates in the nation, with Columbia moving up 15 spots from last year’s study to now be third only behind Memphis, TN and Jackson, MS.
The Innerbody Research study ranked the cities based on the number of STD cases per 100 thousand people.
Columbia was ranked third overall with 1,350 cases per 100k population, Charleston was ranked 14th at 1,011 cases per 100k population, and Greenville was ranked 25th at 914 cases per 100k population.
The study reported that trends showed STD rates were higher in minority populations and that many of the cities in the higher rankings had a higher percentage of minority residents.
