The state has issued tax guidance for college student athletes. 2021 was the 1st year college athletes could be paid for endorsements under the NCAA's new name, image and likeness rules or N-I-L .

The South Carolina Department of Revenue has compiled tips to help student-athletes navigate the tax implications of the NIL legislation. Student athletes may be required to file a tax return claiming income from NIL, depending on their gross income and whether or not their parents can claim them as a dependent.
