South Carolina has joined a group of 24 states that are fighting the tracking of gun purchases by banks and credit card companies. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the state's involvement Tuesday. The coalition wrote a letter to the CEO's of various major credit card providers, saying that the practice misuses the information of consumers.

Wilson said " “Why would banks and credit card companies need a separate code to process gun purchases, if not to possibly track and monitor people who buy them?.“ Our states will vigorously protect the rights of our citizens, including the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.”
The letter comes after those companies recently implemented a merchant category code that essentially creates a list of gun buyers.
