After South Carolinians learned a $1.8 billion surplus never existed, things are shaking up in the Auditor's Office....

A letter of resignation was delivered to Governor Henry McMaster and the State Fiscal Accountability Authority Thursday, January 23, 2025, by the hand of George Kennedy.

SC State Auditor, George Kennedy, who served since 2015, said in the short-and-to-the-point letter dated January 23, 2025, "I believe it is in the best interest of the Office of State Auditor, that I resign from my position as State Auditor effective today."

He along with State Treasurer Curtis Loftis and former Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom, fell under the microscope after a $1.8 billion accounting error was found in a state account in 2022.

Eckstrom resigned in March 2023.

Lawmakers have also called on Loftis to resign.

Kennedy closed his resignation letter with an offer to provide his thoughts on how the Office of the State Auditor could be strengthened, should the opportunity present itself.

Governor Henry McMaster accepted Kennedy's resignation letter Thursday afternoon.
