South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson joined the Charlie James Shows Wednesday afternoon to discuss how artificial intelligence is being used for child sexual abuse.

Wilson spearheaded a letter to Congress that attorneys general from all 50 states as well as four territories signed onto earlier this week regarding the topic of AI.

“I didn’t believe we would be able to do this, but when we wrote the letter, we were able to get all 50 state attorney generals as well as the four territories,” Wilson said.

The letter asked legislators to look into and take action against AI being used to create child sexual abuse content. You can read more on that story here.

“Imagine you have a young child, someone gets a photo of that child from online, it could be an innocent photo of the child at a park or at summer camp or a video on YouTube or something,” Wilson explained. “They take that, and they use AI software to basically recreate an image of that child engaging in a sexualized event or action, something they should not be doing. That’s what we’re trying to prevent.”

Wilson also told Charlie that issues surrounding AI content stretch further than just that.

“They actually recreate the likeness of a celebrity or that public official and you can’t tell the difference,” Wilson said. “AI can of course be used to exploit children, but it can also be used to defame people.
You could have a politician saying something really horrific that they never said, and then they could, you know, lose their job over it.”
