South Carolina has joined a group of over 20 states in filing a brief in appeals court to support religious liberty and freedom of speech. The brief was filed to support a Louisville, Kentucky based wedding photographer who refused to take custom photos at same-sex weddings.
The photographer has asked the 6th Circuit Court Of Appeals to uphold a federal district judge's ruling that protected her from being required to take those type of photos. The City Of Louisville has a public accommodation ordinance that requires photographers to do so.
The State Attorney Genera's Office and the coalition argue that the ordinance violated the Free Speech Clause and Kentucky's Religious Freedom Act.
SC Attorney General Alan Wilson said " Religious freedom and free speech were at the very core of the Bill of Rights. If people cannot speak or worship as they please, liberty is at an end. Requiring a wedding photographer to take pictures of a wedding that goes against her beliefs is unconstitutional.”
