A second Democratic candidate has entered the race for South Carolina’s Governor.
State Representative Jermaine Johnson of the Midlands announced his candidacy Tuesday evening.
While the Republican race I stacked with multiple high-profile candidates, the Democratic race up until now has solely consisted of Charleston-based attorney Mullins McLeod, who has quickly run into legal troubles regarding a recording of a drunken arrest earlier this year.
Johnson, in his candidacy announcement speech, did not reference McLeod, instead focusing his platform on the hardships of everyday South Carolinians and claiming his Republican opponents are “more concerned about serving Donald Trump than they are concerned about serving you”.
Filing for the race opens in March, with primaries scheduled for June 9th of next year. No Democrat has won the South Carolina Governor’s office in over 25 years.
