The road signs have been there for years on the interstates and now the SCDMV electronic signs are promoting the practice as well, slower traffic must stay in the right lane and soon it will be the law.
House Bill H.3011 makes it a violation to block the left lane of a multi-lane highway, otherwise known as the passing lane, by driving slower than surrounding traffic.
The bill limits the fine to no more than $25, no record of the violation is kept by DMV or SLED and a vehicle that is stopped is not subject to a search by law enforcement for that violation alone.
SCDOT will also have to erect more signs notifying drivers of the rule at intervals of no less the 35 miles. The new law officially goes into effect on August 15th.
