According to attorneys with the family of Steven Smith, the body of the teen found on a Hampton County roadway back in July of 2015 was exhumed this weekend, and a second autopsy was conducted before returning the body to the grave.
Smith’s death was originally ruled as a hit and run traffic death, but it became the subject of a SLED investigation after the arrest of Alex Murdaugh due to the alleged connections of the powerful attorney’s family.
Murdaugh’s son Buster has denied any allegations of involvement in the death in social media posts.
An attorney from Bland Rickter Law Firm, which represents the state of Stephen, issued a tweet Sunday thanking SLED, DHEC and others involved in the process and said their team is doing everything it can to find out how Stephen died.
