A man from the Pee Dee area will spend the rest of his life behind bars for killing a cop more than a 1,500 miles away. Jaremy Smith of Marion was sentenced in federal court, Monday.
Smith pleaded guilty to deadly carjacking, kidnapping and multiple weapons violations. The charges came after Smith shot and killed a police officer in New Mexico, in March of last year.
Court records say two days prior Smith killed a woman in Dillon County, execution style and stole her vehicle. He was arrested in New Mexico after a two-day manhunt.
Smith still faces a murder charge in Dillon County. It's unclear when that case will be tried.
