Regardless of era, it seems people have always turned to alcohol in times of stress. Now, an alcohol serving method in Europe that hasn’t been used since the middle ages is making a comeback due to the coronavirus. “Wine windows,” used to serve drinks at a safe distance are being used by bars for the first time since the black plague was around.
Often seen as a relic of a dark past, wine windows were a novelty at most bars, with the majority no longer in use. However, with bars beginning to reopen, some that had a working wine window have decided to use them once again, as a way to deliver drinks without coming in contact with the customer. “During this time, some enterprising Florentine Wine Window owners have turned back the clock and are using their Wine Windows to dispense glasses of wine, cups of coffee, drinks, sandwiches and ice cream — all germ-free, contactless!” said the Wine Window Association website.
The Italian tradition may have a dark past, but some have seen it as a fun way to reopen bars while keeping everyone safe. There are over 150 wine windows currently in Italy, but it could spread as bars look to reopen safely.
