It has been months since the Netflix docuseries "Tiger King" became a cultural phenomenon, yet fans are still intrigued by all the characters caught up in the world of big cat rescue.
While some still want to know more about Joe Exotic, Carole Baskin and the rest of the crew involved in the series, their fame apparently wasn’t enough to attract people to the zoo at the center of the story. According to series star Jeff Lowe, the zoo formerly owned by Joe Exotic has been closed permanently, per NME.
Making the announcement on his Facebook page, Jeff Lowe claimed the zoo located in Oklahoma has been shut down, effective immediately.
“The Tiger King phenomenon has definitely changed our lives in many ways. It has, and probably will continue to make us a target of every nutjob and animal rights loon in the World, but we are prepared. As of today, we have decided to close the old zoo effective immediately,” said Lowe.
Of course, the zoo didn’t close without controversy, as Lowe seemed to claim that pressures from PETA and “false accusations” led to the shutdown.
"The very agency that has given my facility five consecutive perfect inspections, has now folded to the pressures of PETA and continue to make false accusations against me," the post read.
While some fans of "Tiger King" were intrigued by the park, many were happy to see it finally shut down.
For those fans who had plans to visit the zoo, Lowe is still on-track to open his new park, which sparked rumors of a "Tiger King" spinoff.
“Our new park will, at least for the foreseeable future, be a private film set for "Tiger King" related television content for cable and streaming services,” he said. Production has been halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The zoo closure comes after Baskin, Exotic's nemesis, was awarded ownership of the zoo.
