83-Year-Old Beats Coronavirus After 75 Days in Hospital

A Florida resident, 83, is now home after battling COVID-19 at a hospital for 75 days.

In March, Good Morning America reported that Lorenzo Rodriguez tested positive for coronavirus after experiencing a fever. Days later, Rodriguez was rushed to Baptist Health South Florida hospital where things got worse.

When arriving at the hospital, doctors quickly put the 83-year-old under a medically induced coma while using a ventilator to help him breathe.

The situation was scary, but Ester Silva said she knew her father would fight the deadly disease.

"I had faith that he was going to pull through," Silva said. "He's such a hard worker, I knew he wouldn't give in."

After weeks with no progress, Silva asked doctors if her father could receive plasma treatment. Her father received the therapy on April 18, and things changed for the better.

"That night, I was told my father moved his arm and his eyes -- it was incredible," Silva said. "God answered my prayers."

Over the next several weeks, the 83-year-old slowly regained his strength. After having kidney problems, Rodriguez had pneumonia complications but eventually was taken off the ventilator.

While facing these challenges, Silva told her father not to give up and continue fighting.

After 75 days of battling the deadly virus, Rodriguez tested negative and was discharged from the Homestead, Florida. Hospital staff gathered around him to cheer him on when he left the hospital.

Silva shared that she was overwhelmed when she saw her father. She had tears in her eyes when she saw him leave.
