American Airlines Suspending Service to 15 U.S. Cities in October

The airline industry continues to be severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday, American Airlines announced they will be dropping flights to 15 smaller cities across the country due to low demand, the company said in a press release.

Starting on October 7th, American will no longer service Del Rio, Texas; Dubuque, Iowa; Florence, South Carolina; Greenville, North Carolina; Huntington, West Virginia, Joplin, Missouri; Kalamazoo, Michigan; Lake Charles, Louisiana; New Haven, Connecticut; New Windsor, New York; Roswell, New Mexico; Sioux City, Iowa; Springfield, Illinois; Stillwater, Oklahoma; and Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

For now, the suspension of service to these locations is temporary and expected to last through November 3rd. But it’s unclear if they will reinstate service in the future.

“The airline will continue to re-assess plans for these and other markets as an extension of the Payroll Support Program remains under deliberation,” the company said in a statement.

Airlines that received federal aid as part of the CARES Act were barred from making route cuts through September 30th, even if meant flying planes with little or no passengers. But with the aid set to expire, airlines are beginning to make service cuts and start furloughing employees.

Back in July, American Airlines sent notices to about 25,000 workers alerting them that they could be furloughed.

The WARN notices went out to 37% of American Airlines’ flight attendants, or 9,950 people and to 2,500 of its pilots, or 18%, 3,200 maintenance workers and 4,500 fleet service employees, among others, according to CNBC.

The Fort Worth-based airline's revenue in June was down more than 80% from last year, CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom said in a note to staff.
