Election Day saw an influx of voters show up to the polls at the conclusion of an unprecedented election cycle characterized by expanded early and mail-in voting.
But the presidential race between Donald Trump and Joe Biden isn’t over yet.
Americans have to wait yet for the results of the 2020 election as votes continue to be tallied in critical states.
Here’s a look at some of the biggest moments from Election Night 2020.
No winner announced yet
Neither Trump nor Biden was elected president on the night of Nov. 3 — and this was something that both candidates’ camps were aware of. NBC News reported that neither campaign expected a winner to be announced on Tuesday night, per Bloomsberg News’ Mike Dorning.
Biden and Trump speak at separate events
While a winner was not declared, both candidates spoke to their supporters on Tuesday. Biden addressed a drive-in crowd in Wilmington, Delaware, telling the crowd he was “feeling good” about his prospects and repeatedly called for patience as outstanding votes continued to be voted. Trump also addressed a gathering of people from the White House, insisting “it is clear we have won Georgia” where votes were still being tallied, and calling the delay in results “a fraud.”
The count goes on
Experts and outlets struggled to get a clear picture of the outcome in several states where ballots were being counted into the evening. One of these was Pennsylvania, considered by many as having potential to tilt the election in either candidates’ favor, and where ballots had to be postmarked (not received) by Nov. 3.
Democrats retain control of the House
Democrats retained control of the House of Representatives relatively early in the night, and even grew its majority by at least five seats, reports Fox News. Whether Democrats can flip control of the Senate remains to be seen, hinging on races in key states including Georgia and Michigan.
