The singer chose to perform the cover of the hit pop song as a move of solidarity for Spears, who has been outspoken in court about wanting to get out of the heavily restrictive and abusive Jamie Spears-led conservatorship.

Courtney’s cover of “Lucky” features the singer’s iconic grunge vocals and new chord progressions. She tells the audience that she intended to create a more “punk” version of the Pop song. Love’s blend of 90s grunge sound and the current storylines surrounding Spears makes for a somber and heartbreaking performance.

During the final chorus, Courtney tears up while singing the words. “If there’s nothing missing in my life/Then why do these tears come at night?”

She adds, “I’m actually crying. I f***ing hate it when this happens.”

It only makes sense that Love understands the difficulties Spears has been facing for so many years. Courtney has been no stranger to misconceived public portrayals and has had to be her own advocate in her legal dealings.

Courtney has shared links from the #FreeBritney movement and has tweeted content and personal stories about the sexist history of conservatorships.
