A game that looked like a potentially drama-free win for the Padres turned out to be anything but that, as the Padres held on to beat the Giants 7-5 on Friday night after leading 7-1 earlier in the game. The Giants went up 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning, but the Padres poured on the offense afterwards, scoring two runs in the 2nd inning and five runs in the 3rd inning, including a 2-run double from Xander Bogaerts and an RBI-triple from Dustin Harris that hit off the top of the wall and back into play. While protecting a 7-1 lead, Robbie Ray ran into trouble in the 5th inning, and served up a grand slam to Rafael Devers, making it a 7-5 game. San Diego's bullpen was lights out, as Yuki Matsui, Adrian Morejon and Bradgley Rodriguez each pitched a scoreless inning, setting the state for Mason Miller to close things out in the 9th. The All-Star closer retired the first two batters he faced, before issuing a walk to pinch-hitter Nate Furman. Jonah Coleman then laid down a perfect bunt with 2 outs, putting the tying run on base and bringing Devers to the plate with an opportunity to tie or win the game. Devers would work a five-pitch walk, loading the bases for Bryce Eldridge. After falling behind in the count 2-0, Miller fought back and struck Eldridge out looking to end the game. The win was especially crucial as the Diamondbacks had already won earlier in the evening, so the Padres were able to maintain their lead over the D'Backs for the final wild card spot. Michael King will start for the Padres on Saturday.
