The Padres dropped Friday's series opener to the Twins 7-4, as Nestor Cortes was ejected after a mound visit in the 4th inning. He allowed 3 runs through the 3 innings he completed. The Padres held a 2-1 lead entering the 4th inning, but the Twins scored 4 in that inning to take a 5-2 lead. At that point, Mike Shildt opted not to chase the win, as he used Wandy Peralta, David Morgan, Yuki Matsui and Alek Jacob the rest of the way. The four relievers combined to allow 4 runs (3 earned). The Padres brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th inning while trailing 7-4, as Gavin Sheets and Jake Cronenworth each reached base via walk. But Elias Diaz struck out and Fernando Tatis Jr. flew out to right field to end the game, as the Padres dropped the series opener 7-4.
