(WWJ) A COVID-19 outbreak has been traced to a Mid-Michigan summer camp.
The Central Michigan Health Department says there have been 54 cases of the coronavirus confirmed in children and staffers who attended the Springs Ministries Summer Camp in Gladwin last month, with about a dozen additional probable cases.
Officials at the camp say they did take precautions against the spread of the virus. And, as a result of the outbreak, the last two weeks of camp were canceled.
"We had a camper test positive for Covid after returning home from the week of July 12-17. We were informed on Wednesday July 22. Since then we have tested staff and have had many test positive as well," read a notice on the camp's website.
"We followed our policies and that of our licensing agency from the State of Michigan which we stated at the beginning of the summer, including, limiting camper numbers, smaller cabin sizes and more activities and meals outside, recording daily temperatures of staff (no fevers were evidenced) and monitoring their health, taking temperature of campers on arrival and departure and asking questions about camper’s exposure," the notice continues.
"We realize that Covid exposure could happen anywhere and at anytime. We are saddened that it happened here. We are currently working directly with the local health department and are following their recommendations as we move forward."
This comes as the state health department on Wednesday announced 657 new coronavirus and two new deaths in Michigan.
However, according to Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, cases in Michigan are starting to plateau once again, with a steady decrease in the infection rate over the past two to three weeks.
At last count, state reported there were 460 COVID-19 patients hospitalized across the state, 132 of them were ventilators.
Meanwhile, with more teens and young adults contracting an spreading the virus, health officials urge young Michiganders to "socialize responsibly," avoiding large gatherings.
