(WEEI) -- For Joshua Henshaw, chasing his NFL dream entailed a red-eye flight from Salt Lake City to New York.
Henshaw called in to WFAN's "Boomer and Gio" show Tuesday morning to say he was standing outside of the Jets' facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, hoping the team will let him in to try out as a kicker. And Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti tried to do their part to make that happen.
Henshaw, 30, seems fairly legit. He kicked at Lackawanna College in Pennsylvania, on a club team at the University of Vermont and in semipro leagues. He says he's converted 92% of his field goal tries over the last five years in semipro ball and his career long in a game is 57 yards, which is reflected in a sign he's holding outside the Jets' facility.
A YouTube video shows him making 70-yarders in practice.
The Jets are reportedly holding closed tryouts for kickers Tuesday after Kaare Vedvik missed an extra point and a field goal in the team's 17-16 season-opening loss to the Bills on Sunday.
When asked if he truly believes he can kick in the NFL, Henshaw said: "Absolutely. I have 100% confidence in it. I know what my skillset is. It's just a matter of getting it in front of the right people so that they can see what I can do."
Esiason sent a text message to Jets coach Adam Gase letting him know about Henshaw.
"Hey Adam, a guy just called our show who is a kicker who kicked in college and semipro," Boomer wrote in the text. "He's standing outside your facility with a sign. He took a red-eye from Salt Lake and wants a shot. You can check him out as we did on YouTube at 'Josh Henshaw kicks.' Seems like a pretty solid dude chasing a dream. May end up being a great story."
At around 9:10 a.m., about two hours after Henshaw initially called in, Boomer and Gio received an update from him. He was actually a little farther away from his dream than when he started the day.
"The security has slowly moved me back," he said. "I'm actually standing in the median island part on Park Avenue."
Henshaw said he doesn't plan on leaving until the Jets announce they've signed a new kicker.
In the meantime, people who heard Henshaw on WFAN have shown up to wish him luck and take selfies with him.
