BOSTON (WEEI.com) -- Things were going almost as well as possible for talented, troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon, until Thursday.

Gordon announced Thursday morning on Twitter he's stepping away from the football field to focus on his mental health. He also thanked Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft and the entire Patriots organization.

NFL Media's Tom Pellissero reported Gordon is facing another indefinite suspension for violating the terms of his reinstatement under the NFL substance abuse policy. This could mean the end of Gordon's football career.

Gordon has battled substance abuse and mental health issues for several years. He had missed 43 of the Cleveland Browns' 48 games the past three seasons because of suspensions.

After being traded to the New England Patriots following Week 2, Gordon had 40 receptions for 720 yards and three touchdowns while emerging as Tom Brady's No. 2 receiver. The Patriots now have Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Cordarrelle Patterson and Phillip Dorsett as wide receivers.
