We’ve heard it a thousand times growing up, “you have to finish your veggies before you can leave the dinner table!” Or even, “an apple a day will keep the doctor away.” Well, as annoying as it was, our parents were right – fruits and vegetables are a necessary part of a healthy lifestyle. Not only are they healthy food options, but they also can help with digestion, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and even prevent certain types of cancer.

Our friends at Virtua Health are passionate about the power of food. And over the past few years, their Eat Well program has provided affordable and healthy eats to those who need it most. Throughout our community, there are so many people who lack access to healthy foods. But, thanks to generous donors, the Eat Well program takes steps toward addressing food insecurity.

In honor of June being National Fruit and Veggies Month, learn all about Virtua’s Eat Well Program.

mobile farmers market

The mobile farmers market is a 23-foot long bus that travels around Camden and Burlington Counties, selling fresh produce at extremely reduced prices. The market operates year-round, helping underserved South Jersey communities eat healthy.

mobile grocery store

In the fall of 2020, the Eat Well Mobile Grocery Store officially hit the road. This 40-foot long mobile grocery store features below market prices and travels to Camden and Burlington Counties in food-desert communities. Plus, it’s stocked with everything you’d come to expect from a grocery store, like meat, produce, and even household necessities.

food farmacy

And last but not least is Virtua’s Eat Well Food Farmacy. With locations in both Camden and Mount Holly, the Food Farmacy offers nutrition education, social support resources, and access to free produce and nonperishables to those enrolled.

The goal of the Farmacy is to inspire people to manage their medical conditions through healthy and sustainable food options. If you’re interested in the program and are eligible to join, you will be referred through a Virtua-affiliated clinician.
