Back to school season can be a time that’s dreaded by both parents and kids alike – for completely different reasons. The transition from summer vacation to the school environment can sometimes lead to an increase in sicknesses among students. The last thing you’d want after sending your children off to school is to have them bring back a nasty cold that can infect the whole family.

Thankfully though, there are many precautions you can take to lower the chances of getting sick, and our friends at Virtua Health put together a comprehensive guide to help keep you and your kids healthy and safe this school year.

1. Emphasize Hand Hygiene

One of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs is through proper handwashing. The easiest way to teach your children to wash their hands thoroughly is by teaching them a song to remember while they wash. It’s recommended that you sing the “Happy Birthday” song while you wash, but you could always use another 20-second-long song. Perhaps your kids’ favorite TV show theme song, or a commercial jingle would make it more fun and personal!

2. Boost Their Immune System With a Healthy Diet

A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help strengthen your child’s immune system.
Nutrient-dense foods provide essential vitamins and minerals that support overall health and infection resistance. Incorporating immune-boosting foods like citrus fruits (vitamin C), yogurt (probiotics), and leafy greens (vitamins A and C) into their daily meals could help them to combat any future illnesses.

3. Ensure adequate sleep

Proper sleep is crucial for maintaining a healthy immune system. Children need varying amounts of sleep depending on their age, typically ranging from 9 to 11 hours per night for school-aged kids.
Establish a consistent bedtime routine to ensure your child gets enough rest.
Limit screen time before bed and create a relaxing bedtime environment.

4. Stay Up to Date With Vaccinations

Vaccinations are a critical line of defense against many preventable diseases. Ensure your child is up to date with all recommended vaccines, including the annual flu shot. Always remember to keep a record of your child’s immunizations and schedule regular check-ups with their health care provider to stay on track with vaccinations.

5. Teach Proper Etiquette When Sneezing or Coughing

Educate your children on the importance of covering their mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of germs. Remind them to dispose of tissues properly and wash their hands afterward.

6. Encourage Physical Activity

Regular physical activity helps boost the immune system and overall health. Encourage your children to participate in physical activities, whether it’s sports, playground time, or family walks. Perhaps you could even make physical activity a part of your family routine.
Plan active outings on weekends or after school to keep everyone moving and healthy!

7. Stay Hydrated!

Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining good health and supporting the immune system. Ensure your child drinks plenty of water throughout the day, especially during school hours. To ensure they’re drinking throughout the day, provide a reusable water bottle for your child to take to school, and remind them to refill it regularly.

As children return to school, taking proactive steps to protect them from sicknesses is essential. By emphasizing good hygiene, a healthy lifestyle, and open communication, you can help ensure your kids have a safe and healthy school year. These habits reduce illness risk and lay the foundation for lifelong health and wellness practices.
