Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto plans to play for Team USA during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, we learned Tuesday:
Realmuto becomes the latest player with multiple All-Star Game appearances on his resume to pledge to play for the United States in the WBC. Mike Trout is going to be the captain for Team USA, and both Paul Goldschmidt and Trevor Story have already said that they plan to represent the country as well.
A three-time All-Star, Realmuto is slashing .265/.337/.443 with 12 home runs, 52 RBIs and a .780 OPS in 2022. Since the start of the 2018 season, Realmuto leads all catchers, by a fairly wide margin, with 20.1 fWAR.
The fifth installment of the WBC will be played from March 8-March 21. It's been pushed back two years because of uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The USA defeated Puerto Rico in 2017, earning their first WBC championship.
