Fresh off their 18th NBA Championship, the Boston Celtics have started the new season strong with a 19-5 record, sitting just 1.5 games behind the top-seeded Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference.
Boston entered the year as favorites to repeat as champions, opening at +240 at BetMGM and now at +225. They remain ahead of the Thunder, who hold the second-shortest title odds at +425. Unsurprisingly, the Celtics are also the favorites to win the East at -110, well ahead of the Cavs and Knicks, both at +550.
Making back-to-back Finals appearances is no small task, but Boston’s continuity gives them a significant edge. They’ve returned nearly their entire roster from last season, providing plenty of confidence among sharps, who have poured in 63.4% of the handle on the Celtics to win the East—far outpacing Cleveland’s 13.2%.
However, the Cavs are attracting a higher percentage of tickets at 33.1% compared to Boston’s 25.6%. This is no surprise, considering Cleveland’s impressive 15-0 start before suffering their first loss to the Celtics. The public jumped all over the Cavs during that win streak and their odds shifted dramatically, opening at +2000 and now sitting at +550.
Cleveland may be hot now, but that’s the challenge—peaking early doesn’t always translate to postseason success. With the playoffs still months away, the Celtics' experience and consistency will be critical when it matters most.
The Eastern Conference has also been extremely underwhelming this season, with only seven teams above .500 through approximately 25 games. Unless teams like the Sixers, Pacers, or Bulls turn things around, Boston’s primary competition will likely come from the Cavs, Knicks, and possibly the Magic, depending on Paolo Banchero’s return.
While the -110 odds aren’t particularly enticing, Boston’s path to the Finals looks easier than last year, making this bet a strong play for sharps who believe the Celtics are poised to repeat as conference champions.
