The Southwest Division is one of the NBA’s most competitive divisions this season and predicting its winner will be a difficult task. The Houston Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies are neck and neck as odds-on favorites at BetMGM, but the Dallas Mavericks aren’t too far behind. Plenty of unexpected things are sure to happen by the time the regular season is over, but let’s take a look at the cases for the legitimate contenders.
The Rockets (21-11) are the odds-on favorites at +140. Their middle-of-the-road offense is nothing to scoff at, but their third-ranked scoring defense is what’s keeping them consistent in 2024-25. Houston might not have the star power of the other Southwest contenders, but it does have a health and depth advantage over the rest of the field. The Rockets’ young core is meshing well with veterans in Ime Udoka’s second season with the team.
The Grizzlies (22-11) have the second-best odds and have performed at a high level despite a slew of injuries at several positions. They’re averaging a league-high 123.4 points per game this season and are 8-5 straight up without Durant. Jaren Jackson Jr. and supporting players have been able to get the job done regardless of who is available so far, but whether Zach Edey can consistently hold up at center against more versatile big men remains a question that needs answering.
The Mavericks (+300) are nearing a tough stretch, as Luka Doncic will miss at least a month with a calf injury. Dallas was constructed to center its offense around the gravity of Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but that plan won’t work as well with just one star. Dallas will look to stay competitive while hoping Doncic’s injury doesn’t linger to stay in the hunt.
Best Bet: Houston Rockets (+140)
The Grizzlies appear to have the higher ceiling, but the Rockers have a borderline top-10 offense to go alongside their elite defense. Memphis’ injury problems could improve over time, but bettors can be more sure about what Houston is going to bring to the table on a nightly basis. This race is still a toss-up between the Rockets and Grizzlies at this point, as the Mavericks have too much to overcome without the engine that powers their offense on the shelf for an extended period of time.
