Public Bets for NFC and AFC Championship Games

Breaking down the most popular bets at BetMGM ahead of this weekend’s conference championship matchups.

The NFL Conference Championships kick off this weekend, and the four best teams in football will face off to determine who gets to take a trip to New Orleans to face off in the Super Bowl. As you might expect, these games generate a massive amount of revenue at the sportsbooks, with thousands upon thousands of wagers being placed on all kinds of different markets on the AFC and NFC Championship games.

Over at BetMGM, our friend John Ewing was kind enough to share with us which bets are the most popular at his book so far for these games. These are the bets that have garnered the most total tickets, not money, which is important to highlight. These would be considered the most “public” bets of the weekend.

Commanders ML +240

The most popular bet of the entire weekend so far is taking Jayden Daniels and the Commanders on the moneyline to straight up beat the Eagles outright at +240 odds. The rookie quarterback has been phenomenal this season, a revelation that has put Washington back on the track to respectability. His legend continues to grow, having one of the greatest rookie seasons of all time, and people have clearly taken notice and jumped on the bandwagon at plus money.

Bills ML +110

The second most popular wager over at BetMGM Sportsbook so far is taking the other underdog to win the game outright on the road, and that is Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Allen will likely either win the NFL MVP award or finish second for it this season, and coming off a big win against Baltimore, people actually think they can take down the Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead. I have to imagine that some of this is also because people are generally getting tired of the Chiefs, and think they get favorable treatment by the league.

Commanders +6

The third most popular bet of the weekend at BetMGM is taking Washington plus the points instead of outright. These people maybe don’t think the Commanders will win the game outright and become one of the greatest Cinderella stories ever, but they are willing to wager that it is a close game. It is pretty clear that no matter if it is the moneyline or the spread, a majority of bettors prefer the Commanders in this game. There is little love for the Eagles this weekend from the public, which makes sense since Daniels is the talk of the sports world right now, with a bandwagon growing larger by the minute.

Bills +2

Very similar to the Commanders, the Bills getting two points on the spread is the fourth most popular wager at the book. It is rare that two points make that much of a difference in an NFL game, but these people don’t want to take the chance, so they hopped on the spread line with Buffalo. I am pretty shocked by the numbers on this game. I really thought everyone and their brother would bet on Mahomes and the Chiefs at home, considering many think it is rigged for them every week. But again, I think there are also a lot of “hate-wagers” here because Kansas City is starting to sour with NFL fans, much like New England did for years.

Commanders at Eagles Over 47.5

We are finally getting to the totals now, with the most popular total of either game being the over in the Commanders at Eagles affair. This is far from shocking, as the over is almost always the most popular side of any total, but this game in particular stands out of the two. Daniels and the Commanders are rolling, putting up over 40 against Detroit last weekend, while the Eagles continue to deploy their ultimate weapon in Saquon Barkley. Plus, people always want to see a high-scoring game, so I could have predicted this before I even saw the numbers.

Bills at Chiefs Over 47.5

No surprises here that the over in the Bills at Chiefs game will round out the top six most popular wagers of the weekend at BetMGM. As I just mentioned, the over is almost always the most popular side of any total in any game, especially games that feature star quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. Neither defense has been that great either, so you get a recipe for a ton of bets to come in on the over.
