We’re in Carcosa now.
The Patriots have been busy filling out the coaching staff for new head coach Mike Vrabel, hiring Terrell Williams as the defensive coordinator and a guy you might remember as the offensive coordinator.
As it was confirmed that the Patriots have hired Josh McDaniels as the offensive coordinator, it felt a lot like, as was famously a theme of my favorite show, True Detective: Season 1 (and just Season 1, no other seasons, that is very important), time is a flat circle.
“You’ll do this again.”
“Everything we’ve ever done or will do we’re going to do over and over and over again.”
While the Patriots made a great choice in McDaniels and this is a good hire, it is also a safe one. What happened to the “long list” of candidates Vrabel mentioned?
“It’s a long list,” he said. “There’s a long list, and, you know, I’ve had a relationship with Josh, and I’ve had relationships with other offensive coaches and defensive coaches that we’re going to interview and want to bring in here.”
That was eight days ago, so it seems the team got a lot of interviews and decisions completed in just over a week, I guess.
It feels like it was going to be McDaniels all along. Because it’s easy. And that’s not a bad thing for the team, this is a solid hire. I’m excited to see what he does with Drake Maye and I think the Patriots have a shot to make the playoffs next season.
But it is interesting that Bill Belichick gets fired and then replaced with his former players and guys who coached with him and then his former offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach also comes back in hopes of returning the team to the “Patriot Way” that was established under Belichick.
Because time is a flat circle for the Patriots. And this move, along with hiring Vrabel as the head coach, puts them in a position to enter the spiral of winning and success once again.
