Frozen shrimp recalled due to possible salmonella contamination

Next time you’re heading to the supermarket to buy frozen shrimp, you may want to be extra cautious.

The Food and Drug Administration announced the newest outbreak of salmonella in several states is linked to the consumption of frozen shrimp manufactured by Avanti Frozen Foods of India.

According to Today, the frozen shrimp recall was issued to products brought into the United States from November 2020 to May 2021. However, Avanti Frozen Foods of India had a forgoing recall of imported products from late December 2020 to February 2021.

The products were sold nationwide at supermarket chains such as Food Lion, Hannaford, and Meijer.

In an announcement released by the FDA from Avanti Frozen Foods of India, it said the company “is voluntarily expanding a prior recall issued on June 25, 2021 to include certain consignments of various sizes of frozen cooked, peeled, deveined, shrimp (with some packaged with cocktail sauce) sold in various unit sizes, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.”

Since July 21, cases have been reported, including one person who was sick after eating the shrimp. However, according to the FDA, that was not part of the previous recall.

After the cases were revealed, Avanti Frozen Foods of India expanded the recall to include more frozen shrimp products on August 13.

As of now, nine people have been sick due to the recall including, four people from Nevada, two people from Arizona, two people from Michigan, and one person from Rhode Island. Of those people, three needed to go to the hospital.

The FDA recommends that consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat or serve these frozen shrimp in these specific places:

• Sandbar
• Sea Cove
• Waterfront Bistro
