As the Patriots new coaching staff begins to come together, the old one is beginning to break apart.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, OLBs coach Steve Belichick and running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri are interviewing for defensive jobs at the University of Washington on Friday. Jedd Fisch, the Huskies' new head coach, coached with the Patriots as their quarterbacks coach in 2020.

It was reported last month by Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer that both Steve Belichick and his younger brother Brian “have both already been offered the opportunity to return to the team for 2024,” something new head coach Jerod Mayo has since confirmed. It was then reported by ESPN's Mike Reiss that if he were to return, it could perhaps be in an "assistant head coach/senior advisor" type of role.

Mayo and Steve Belichick have grown close over the last four seasons while coaching the Patriots' linebackers together, but with DeMarcus Covington being promoted to defensive coordinator on Thursday, it seems like the writing is on the wall for the eldest of Belichick's sons.

The hiring of Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator may also put running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri on the outside looking in to New England's new offensive staff. Sunseri, 32, came in to NFL coaching as a defensive assistant in 2020 and has coached New England's running backs since Ivan Fears' departure in 2021. Prior to coaching, he played safety at the University of Alabama under Nick Saban and was a fifth-round pick of the Saints in the 2014 NFL Draft.
