Collegeville mother pleads guilty to asking son, 13, to retrieve her gun before he shot, killed younger sister

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The mother of a teenage boy, who shot and killed his younger sister in their Collegeville home last year, has pleaded guilty to allowing him access to the gun.

Daisy Vasquez, 32, pleaded guilty to two felony charges: endangering the welfare of a child and providing a firearm to a minor. Her son was 13 years old at the time, and her daughter was 12.

She admitted in court that she told her son to go out to her car and get her gun. The clip was not in the gun, but once inside the home, he pointed the gun at his sister, unaware that there was a bullet in the chamber, and pulled the trigger.

“She had him bring the gun into the house, and then while he was in possession of the gun, her daughter was shot and killed,” said prosecutor Lauren Marvel.

As part of a negotiated plea, Vasquez was sentenced to 90 days in county jail, followed by nearly nine months on house arrest and four years probation. She’s required to undergo mental health treatment and to comply with all family court orders.

“That’s going to make sure that the community is safe and that the individuals in her home are safe as well,” Marvel explained.

“Another important thing: Possession of a firearm by a minor when it involves an adult giving a firearm to a minor. If you’re convicted of that felony, you are not permitted to own or possess any firearms, and if you do, it’s a crime.”

The boy was initially charged as an adult. He pleaded guilty as a juvenile to involuntary manslaughter in March and was given probation with several terms, including no visitations with his mother, anger management and community service.

Vasquez’s attorney, Fred Perri, said it’s an unspeakable tragedy involving a mother who lost a child.
